Physical Comedy Lab

play with clown improvisations to find comedic characters

Come move and create with Lecoq trained multidisciplinary international artists Kathleen O’Reilly, Anya Opshinsky and drummer percussionist Nicolas Martinez in this intensive workshop that will give you a taste of their creative process for their piece, ROVERS: Mimes on the Run. A physical comedy piece that they recently debuted in Paris, France and will play at SKAMpede this summer. Jump into creation mode while learning fundamental mime techniques, play with clown improvisations to find comedic characters, and experiment with the many ways that rhythm and music can breathe new life and comedy into your storytelling.

Mime can open up limitless possibilities in the universe that you wish to create. Participants will be guided in learning the importance of resistance, weight and creating space in mime that will also enrich their presence on stage. We will also work on physical articulation by learning a series of actions such as opening a vault or climbing a wall. We will also play with the clown’s approach to such actions to build the comedy of a scene and explore the uniqueness of each clown. We will look at integrating rhythm and music to help build tension and present comedic opportunities. Our goal is that our participants find the joy in creating engaging material by exploring the comedic capacities of the body to communicate through mime and clown and experience how rhythm and music can further enrich the creative process.
